Our forlorn phonebox

Hernhill Village telephone box

Hernhill Village telephone box

The old red phonebox which is tucked away beside the old retired Hernhill village shop has had some notices slapped on it by the BT. They say no longer is it viable and that they feel they must remove the service. What happened to public service from our utilities companies? All destroyed by shareholder greed?

Well, if you pass the old thing make a call – it’s only 20p. I get my kids to do it to my mobile for fun (well they are 2 and 3 yrs). Perhaps then BT might reconsider. If they don’t I understand they will offer the phonebox itself to the village for a nominal fee….It does beg the question what is the point in keeping it without the workings? Any ideas what we would do with it?

Personally I think that the upkeep of a phonebox that’s not used seems a little pointless, surely virtually everyone has a mobile these days and in an emergency the pub is across the road!

However I’d like to see the box remain in the village as a “feature” even if it’s sans workings.

Well the pub is not always open and mobiles run out of juice but I take your point. I think the foriegn fruit pickers might use it a bit but perhaps not enough to pay for upkeep. It just seems sad that BT appear to have lost any sense of public service with public phones.
I have a fancy that it could host some sort of online screen and keyboard so that people could access email etc but I fear that too is outclassed by online phones and iPhones etc

    Free public shower?
    Tanning booth?

I have created a petition at Number 10 downing street website, wanting to save the Red boxes and Phoneservice. Sign at http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/BTPhonebox/ I already have over 10 signatures, in less than a week! I have saved my local red phonebox from closure, and it still has its phone, just no coin service.

    Hope you save yours!
